Andrew DeSimone’s knowledge of and compassion for doctors and healthcare providers and their patients started at an early age. He tagged along with his dad, Dr. Philip DeSimone, on his rounds at Lexington’s VA hospital and the University of Kentucky, seeing patients dying from cancer.

“My dad was a hematologist and oncologist, and a professor in the UK College of Medicine. My brother Christopher is a surgeon at UK, specializing in gynecologic oncology, so I’m very familiar with the healthcare field, and both the successes and challenges of providers. Medical malpractice defense and healthcare law are a natural fit for my practice.”

He started his legal career as a legal aid attorney for Fayette County, defending indigent criminals and representing mentally ill patients at Eastern State Hospital in Lexington. There, he began to build his skills in medical law and cross-examining expert witnesses.

“Success in medical malpractice defense relies on research, expertise, and becoming clear on what happened from different perspectives.” — Andrew DeSimone

As a history and anthropology major at Vanderbilt, Andrew built the research and writing skills that make him such an effective attorney today.

“My senior thesis on the shifting balance of power between the United States and Great Britain required original research with historical sources, and my professor taught me to be concise and precise with language. These skills serve me well in med mal work, since success relies so much on research, expertise, and becoming clear on what happened from different perspectives.”

Andrew volunteers with Surgery on Sunday and the American Red Cross Bluegrass Chapter, and serves on the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Publications Committee and as 2021 chair of DRI’s Medical Liability and Health Care Law Seminar. “Working with DRI gives me great opportunities to write and edit, and to keep up with the latest research in the field. It helps me be more effective defending healthcare providers, whose skills and passion for their work is so critical to all of us, especially today.”
