Client Green Forests Work Planting Trees in Leslie County
In 2012, Sturgill Turner attorney Kevin Henry helped Green Forests Work, a nonprofit that reforests former mine sites across Appalachia, to organize and receive its 501(c)(3) status. In the ensuing years, this University of Kentucky based nonprofit has planted more than five million trees across 9,400 acres in 16 Appalachian states, including a recent project in Leslie County, Ky., featured in the April 7, 2023, Lexington Herald Leader.
The Leslie County project boasted close to 100 volunteers who planned to plant 8,000 trees on an old strip mining site that had been reclaimed before, but with non-native plants that were not as valuable to the environment as the newly planted forest will be. This project adds to the close to 58,000 trees The Nature Conservancy and Green Forests Work has already planted across an adjacent 84 acres.
“I’m honored to be associated with Green Forests Work, and to have had the opportunity to help this great organization get off the ground,” said Kevin Henry. “We’re proud of their work, and of the volunteer opportunities they have provided for thousands across the region in reforestation projects benefiting communities with cleaner air, stormwater and erosion control, ecotourism and restoration of timber.”
